About this app

Learn to write Chinese characters with Skritter, whether you have a strong grasp of written Chinese and want to remember the characters better or are a beginner who doesn’t know where to start.

Skritter has existed for more than 10 years, and for a good reason: our learners are amazing! They help us with feedback, which allows us to create what we think is the best way to learn to write Chinese out there!

If you have tried to write Chinese before, you probably noticed that it requires us to learn characters rather than the roman alphabet we know from English. You can learn it through our “decks” (similar to a card deck) based on topics and difficulty.

Deck examples:
- Ordering or making coffee or tea (so you can get your morning caffeine fix)
- Chinese Stroke Order (master the rules quickly and efficiently)
- HSK 1-6
- More advanced topics like Yoga and talking about your Emotions
- And many more…

First, you learn a character’s meaning, reading, and tone; then practice writing it. Before you know it, you’ll want to learn thousands of characters. Try our app and see for yourself why thousands of people use it every day.

Have questions, problems, or feedback? We would love to hear from you. Reach out to us at team@skritter.com

Skritter is perfect for motor/visual-based learners like me. By making you adhere to stroke order, it prepares you well to use handwriting input on touchscreens and inherently organizes learning by radical composition. I also appreciate the filters and options for writing, reading, etc. because I have a strange objective, to learn to write and read without learning to speak or listen, so I was glad that it was flexible enough to accommodate me.

Looks like a solid app, but while they have the option to learn Traditional Chinese, they don't have any Cantonese voice clips to go with. (Traditional Chinese characters are mainly used in Hong Kong, where Cantonese is the major dialect.) I understand that the vast majority of writing apps use Mandarin, but it makes it particularly frustrating for anyone learning Cantonese to have no options for writing practice. Would love to come back if this was an option.

Thanks for your review and sorry for the lack of Cantonese support. We do plan to expand upon this in the future but it's going to take some time as the main focus right now is Mandarin Chinese (as you've mentioned). We do have some light Cantonese support which you can set in your language options. Please email us at team@skritter.com!

I can't speak to the full version, since the monthly price is a little steep for me. But this free version is great! It has numbers, the 100 common radicals, and proper stroke order, and more. All the basics to get started. The user interface is really nice. The writing practice is really easy to use and it's helpful. They also have great options for testing yourself on the writing, spelling, pronunciation, and definition of the different words.
